Introduction

The environment is everything outside us. However, this¡Ýeverything outside us¡Ýis very vague. If we want to start to know the true meaning of what is the environment, we must know the serious environmental problems all around us and globally that are of such major concern.
This book was conceived from just such an idea. I am an engineer¡Ýso I will be taking a technical survey journey around the world. And this survey journey will concentrate on the remote environments which we Asians tend not to know so much about. While I will try to describe the true meanings of what we call the environment, I would really like to be able to understand the many environmental problems that exist; and to write about what, how, and why we should do our best for the environment.
The environment is so enormous that we cannot easily grasp its dimensions. However, when the environment is so rapidly changing due to various forces such as globalization, we really need to be able to understand just what the environment is. So, let¡Çs look now at the environment which I have condensed down to just three main areas: nature, technology, and society.
